Reflections on my time away from cycling

Edomondo mileage report by month Next month will be the one year anniversary of the most traumatic event of my life.  I was cruising the Internet relaxing today and was looking at my mileage for the last few months.  In March 2014 I was on target to break the miles that I rode in February 2014 when I was hit on March 17.  For the next 8 months I hardly rode my remaining mountain bike.  Starting on December 2, 2014 I started bike commuting my new bike. One of the key successes that I can attribute to my quick recovery to getting my miles back up on my bike so quickly is that my wife  +Sylvia Wormley  has taken excellent care of me.  I decided to let her manage my diet and health during my recovery from the accident.  She is my crew chief when it comes to keeping me on a path to better health. During the 8 months off the bike I did not gain back the weight that I had lost the previous year.  I cut out all of my consumption of products w...

Mid Night Ride through Albany

I have not done a mid night ride in a long time.  The last ride that I did from one day to the next was when I was visiting my son in Lincoln Nebraska.  I rode around at night just to see what the city was like after dark.  I use to ride on mid night rides on a regular basis in Portland, Oregon with the Shift Bicycle Club . Well tonight I finished installing an Ikea entertainment and storage wall unit for Sylvia. That is the subject of another story on my other blog, Screws In My Coffee .  I needed to ride 15 miles to make my goal of 200 miles for this week.  I thought about blowing it off as it was really late, but I had another goal to ride my bike every day which I need to do.  so I got ready for my daily ride. As it turned out as usual once I start riding I cannot stop so I ended up riding for a good while.  first I decided to get some grub.  I knew that in Albany, GA on a Sunday night the choices would be slim.  i decided to stop at ...

1,000 miles in 2014

Image
I have been riding every day this year.  Today I just past my 1,000 mile marker.  This year I am working on being a consistent cyclist and not a ride, then stop then ride again.  I will not be focused on speed improvements but I will focus on sustained strength.  to that end I am using a Garmin feature for setting short term goals that will help me focus on my long term goal of 10,000 miles this year. When I set a monthly goal I can see my progress.  When I set my weekly goal I can see progress.  200 miles a week will get me to my annual goal.  Last year I had a goal of 250 miles a week and I only rode during the week.  The ride 250 miles in 5 working days did not work.  I will see if this year's method will work better.

BRAG fall ride with hills and head winds

Image
This century ride was like no other in that I did not have the complete belief that I was prepared physically to ride 100 miles. My last 60 mile ride a few weeks ago saw me black out in my wife's presence one hour after the ride. I felt fine after the ride, but after sitting in the recliner for an hour after my shower I tried to stand up and got intense leg cramps. When I finally stood up I got dizzy and sat back down. My wife told me later that I had blacked out and my body was shaking. I have never experienced this after any sort of exercise activity. My my doctor's test and wife believes I have a deficiency in manganese. I believe that I can not ride with the 40 somethings at 20+ MPH for 30 miles and then ride another 30 miles st my normal 16 MPH pace. My wife has been feeding me mineral rich foods including bone marrow soup with green leafy stuff like kale.   She has also been stuffing a few vitamin supplements in my mouth every evening.   All in all I have renew...

Pecan City Pedalers 2013 National Bike Challenge celebration ride

Image
I had an enjoyable ride with the Pecan City Pedalers this morning.  I did not want to ride fast, but the lure of riding with friends and the sound of 14 tires on a country road allowed me to keep up with the group for most of the ride.  It was a beautiful fall day in SW Georgia, the winds were slight and the sun was not too hot.  A good time was had by all. We were celebrating the fact that our team, the Pecan City Pedalers Wing nuts came in first place for the state of Georgia in the National Bike Challenge.  I came in 10th place for the state and 737th nationally.  I was injured for August and September so I did not get the miles in that I wanted.  Next year I will do better.

Endorphin Cycle Junkie

< sarcasm warning>   The following posting is full of tongue and cheek commentary about cycling and what goes on in my brain.  Humor is the main point of this blog post, but as with any of my public writings there is a bit of reality in my blog posts.  If you are easily offended or want to argue about scientific facts on human biology and psychology do not read this blog post </ sarcasm warning>   I am a child of the sixties born at the end of the baby boom.  I was (and still am in my mind) an African American hippie that dropped out of college and joined a religious cult and moved to the mountains during the early seventies.  I have been exposed to many addictive substances in my life from over the air TV to Green Giant frozen creamed corn in a bag and I have reached the ripe age of an early sexagenarian without ever having to battle any serious physical addit...

Slowly but surely

Riding into work this morning was a deliberate effort to focus on my riding posture and not speed.  I played a game on upper Lilly Pond by riding as close to the fog line as possible.  I am also training to use my left hand to drink so that it gets a break from bearing the weight of my upper torso on the handle bars.  Consistent breathing and heart rate over a long distance 100+ mile are more important to me than the fast pace on a 30-40 mile ride. My goal for the month is 1,000 miles to equal last month's 1,000+ miles.  My focus is to do 250 miles each week as a minimum by riding 50 miles round trip on my bike commute.  This new pace ups the ante for my goal for the year of 10,000 KM or 6,214 miles to 12,875 KM or 8,000 miles. Ideally I would love to ride 10,000 miles this year.  I'll see how close I get.  Maybe 2014 will be the 10,000 miles year.

Prision to Peanut Ride

I had a great time riding through the country with fellow cyclist.  The event is the second of this new annual event.  About 150 cyclist showed up to do the ride.  Initially I was going to do a moderate pace and relax and enjoy the view, but cycle thunder had other ideas.  As soon as we left the city of Andersonville I found myself riding faster and faster trying to catch up a rider in a Pecan Peddler's jersey.  Once I got there I found myself in a pace line with him and Lynn Pflepsen (I will add his name when I see him again or he identifies himself after reading this). We rode most of the ride trading off the lead position pulling the group along at a faster pace than I originally wanted to ride.  This is the great thing about riding in a group, at least for me, the group inspired me to ride faster and push harder.  I even got back into practice in riding right off of the rear tire of the rider in front of me until I...

61st birthday ride

Image
I made a few wrong turns. I rode  about 2 miles down a sandy muddy red dirt road. I did not make it to St. Mark, but I did have fun. Sylvia is close with a car to take me home. The end of pavement on Spring Hill Road at the Florida Georgia State Line The Historic Florida State Capitol Building Yours Truly at the The Historic Florida State Capitol Building Oh yeah I discovered another dang segment on Spring Hill. This is where I met the first dirt road. I wondered if riders from Thomasville rode out here for kicks because it was a nice dead end. Well I did not think it was nice because I wanted to cross over into Florida and get to Tallahassee. Oh well I'm in ninth place, but it will be a long while before I ride 100 miles to get on that segment again. Yours truly at the Florida Georgia state line AGAIN on US 319 My bike in Sale, Georgia My 1996 Cycle Oregon bandanna and my flash charger. The ...

61st birthday ride

View Jenny Lane to Tallahasse in a larger map On April 16, 2013 I am planning on riding double my age in miles. I was born in 1952, so I am turning 61 which means I am planning on riding 122 miles. The game of riding double your age was a game that I played with some cycling buddies when I lived in Portland, Oregon. I have never done a ride on my exact birthday, usually I ride the weekend after or before. This will be the first time since my 50th birthday that I am riding double my age. The game had a disclaimer that said that after 50 you could ride your age. I have been riding more regularly than ever so I am confident that I can do this ride. In January I rode round trip to Thomasville logging in 140 miles just to get a What A Burger. This ride is going be my first one way ride long distance (for me over 100 miles) ride.  My wife Sylvia is going meet me when I finish and give me a ride home. I am riding my bike from my home in Albany, GA to a small town south of...

Strava Segment Madness

Image
I did not set up the segment.  I did not want to participate in the segment.  I found myself looking at my results and wondering who was number on on the segment leader board list and then I was hooked. There are not too many hills in here in SW Georgia, but one of them is near my job.  This segment is on the final approach to the ASU campus.  The grade is a measly .7% to 1.4% (54M to 64M) over a distance of about 2 KM.  The record was held by  Edward Picolo  at 4 minutes and 3 seconds.  When I started bike commuting in September 2012 I was generally tired at this point of my commute.  When I started using Strava in January 2013 I discovered the segment and I was a bit stronger in my endurance and I was always making an effort to finish strong up this hill. Only 5 riders appear on the leader board since 2012.  I have been competing against my best efforts for a few months until yesterday when I decided that I w...

Cycling Challenges

Image
I am uploading my cycling trip GPS data to a web the Endomondo sports tracking web site.  there were several cycling challenges that I joined to keep me motivated.  Screen shots are below showing my current status.  My first challenge has 6883 members.  The person who rides the most miles in April will get 20% off on a phone case.  I am ranked number nine in this challenge with 270.87 miles.  the leader has 533.64 miles. Next challenges has 352 members.  the goal is the same as the first challenge except the goal is just to be healthy from riding.  In this challenge I am ranked second with 270.87 miles.  the leader has 533.64 miles, The next challenge has 3,010 members.  the goal is to see how many miles you can ride in one year.  I am ranked 110 with 1,763 miles.
