Mr. Mellow Yellow does 71 miles with PCP Race Team

Image
Today I participated with the  PCP Racing Winter Training Series #7 . Typically The PCP race team rides "slower" during the winter.  This winter I have been enjoying the rides with the team. This ride was the fist time that I rode the long route and finished with someone that started the ride. I did get dropped right before Sasser when the first sprint occurred at about mile 45.  To be honest I thought I as going to ride the rest of the ride by myself, which is OK for me.  I use the PCP Race Team to sling shot me out on a country road completely exhausted and then I ride back home. Today however I decided to keep riding as hard as I could.  I knew that the team would stop at the Sasser gas station and country store to get fluids, snacks and to socialize.  I decided to see if I could catch them before they left. As it turns out I did make it to the store in time to get water and add my Heed to it and rest a bit.  ...

Wow, I See The Light

Image
Today was my first ride to work on my bicycle using my new Busch & Müller Luxos U IQ2 lighting system described in a previous blog posting . It is rare that I am overwhelmed by a product that I purchase.  To say that my expectations were exceeded by this head light would be an understatement. I am use to riding down two lane roads in darkness where the only light is on my bike.  My battery powered Niterider Pro 1800 is a great light for cycling, but when I run it at 1800 lumens the battery life is only 1.5 hours.  most of the time I ride with it at 700 lumens and the battery life is 4 hours.  I bought an extra charger so that I could leave one at work and charge it when I arrive after my morning commute so that I will have enough battery life for my ride home.  My normal commute is 25 miles one way which takes about 1.5 hours. The beam on the Niterider Pro is bright, but narrow.  I can see a little in the distance, and right near my wheel, s...

Battery Free At Last

This is version 1.0 for my dynamo light install.  I used the existing bracket from my N iterider Pro 1800  head light.  I used almost 30 zip ties for this install.  I am thinking that once I have the light positions finalized I will order some wire with more rubber protection and have the ends made professionally. Red object is my Garmin 810 I have a B&M Luxos U  that I purchased from Peter White  Cycles.  I have been corresponding with Peter and Linda White for about two years before making this purchase.  I must say that they are a great company to purchase bicycle gear from.  I usually know what I want, but in this case I was clueless about dynamo lighting.  I read their web site for months and then I send them an email.  they responded and answered all of my questions. I ordered the SON Delux ...

It is a dry cold in SW Georgia

Layered up for the morning commute On cold mornings I am always inspired to ride my bike "after" I am on it and about 5 miles away from home.  For me the hardest part of a bike commute on a cold morning is getting out of the door.  By now I have many thousands of bike commuting miles behind me and still the temptation to stay in bed is alive. So my automatic pilot kicks in and I start to get ready for a cold ride.  I start to layer up my gear. The outside temperature at my house was 34 degrees when I checked it.  This tells me that out on the road it is 10 degrees colder so I know I will wear my extra layer on my legs. I know my legs rarely get cold during a winter ride, but my concern is that during a long ride I do not want my legs to loose warmth and cramp up. Here is what I wore today.  I had on a base layer athletic short sleeve shirt, Castelli Nanoflex Bib Tights, BCC Zombie Raccoon Top, Castelli Nanoflex Arm Warmers, Castelli Nanoflex Leg Warmers,...

The Orange Eagles School of Cycling

Image
This is my Seven Cycles 622 SLX Today was the first time in over a year that I had the privileged to ride with the PCP Race Team .  I have not done much road cycling since March 17, 2014.  I started bike commuting on my new bike December 2, 2014.  Today was my first day back in the Orange Eagles School of Cycling and I was excited. Why do I call this group the Orange Eagles?  When I was riding with them today I thought about the saying "How can you soar with eagles when you are surrounded by turkeys".  This statement reflects a negative attitude, so I was thinking about restoring the statement with my training.  I want to soar with eagles, but first I had to find some eagles to soar with, then I need to train so that I can fly with them. Kent Wheeler took this photo of me on the ride. Michele Moulton says we were going 23 MPH. Today was another "Sling Shot" ride for me.  That is where I use the PCP Race team to get me way out in the mi...
