Shift To Bikes

I have to plug this group, Shift To Bikes . I rode with them on some awesome bike adventures when I lived in Portland around 2002 when they first got started. My favorite ride was the Mystery Ride. We met at a pub on the east side and the ride leader would start the ride at mid-night. The only person who knew the route was the leader. It was cool riding through the deserted downtown streets with 200 cyclist. There were all sorts of bikes from the traditional to the home made. Shift To bikes is sort of an anti-cycling club. They advocate cycling as being a social fun activity and not just a sport for health. I met a lot of folks that I never would have met if not for this club and my bike. There were lots of homeless cyclist in the group. When I think back on it I was unemployed at the time during the big Dot Com crash. I was getting unemployment and I would look for a job by day and hang out with the likes of these street urchins in the afternoon and evening riding my bike...

Dreaming of Cycle Oregon 2015

Image
I am sending this news letter to you with the idea that it will inspire your cycling.  I participated in Cycle Oregon in 1999 and rode it on a Trek MTB with slicks, areo bars and a non-stock 52 tooth big crank.  I bought the areo bars on day two because there were lots of head winds.  When I say fully supported I mean bike shops bring trailers full of parts and accessories to help you along if something breaks or you forgot something or you just want to try something new. I had a blast.  That year we looped Crater Lake and I did my first back to back to back 100+ mile per day.  I have wanted to do this ride again and since my accident I decided to start planning for 2015. Cycle Oregon to me is a well planed and supported ride.  The more cycling events I ride the more I come to realize that Cycle Oregon is  a world class event.  There is a handbook on how to train and what to bring.  Check out this event even if you do not plan ...

Pecan City Pedalers Cyclist Cooler 2.0

I wanted to fix the misting apparatus for the Pecan City Pedalers Nut roll.  Below is the result of my efforts. Here is how it will be disconnected for storage. The club has two of these misting devices.  They will be in use for the 2015 Nut roll.

Pecan City Pedalers Nut Roll 2014

Yet another bike event that I helped out as a volunteer.  My cycling club, The Pecan City Pedalers , sponsor this ride each year.  The rides stars and ends in the beautiful  Parks at Chehaw in Albany, Georgia. I also did the T-Shirt artwork for this ride. Here is an Auto Awesome from Google Google Does it again.  I am so amazed at how Google grabs data and re-imagines it.  This is so cool, taking what I consider "poor" content and mashing it up into something that is presentable.  This captures the start of the 2014 Nut roll in Albany, GA It was a wonderful day to be out supporting the activity of cycling.  This was my second year working on the event and I always have fun. I also had fun reworking the Nut Man logo. The original Nut Man The new and improved Nut Man

My Next Bike

Image
I had a really good bike fit a few months ago.  The folks at Podium Multisport in Atlanta know how to assess your physiology and they understand cycling and bikes at a level that I have never seen in my 40 plus years of cycling.  I went into the bike fit with a favorite bike in mind that I wanted, but as with any experience with experts I came away learning something that I did not expect, titanium is still a good material for building bicycles. My old Serotta was carbon steel, so I figured that my next bike would be a carbon fiber bike.  I rented a Trek Domane 4.2 last year when I was visiting Austin, Texas for a wedding.  I rode the bike for about 200 hard miles in 4 days.  I hit all of the chip seal roads and steep hills that I use to ride when I lived there and I was quite pleased with the ride and fit. I have an unusual body anatomy.  I have the torso and arm reach of a typical man who is 5'6" and the legs of a typical man who is 6'3".  I am ...
